What are the Non-Hormonal Coils?
Non-hormonal contraception provides a means of preventing pregnancy without the use of hormones. These methods can be particularly appealing to women who prefer not to use hormonal contraceptives due to personal preferences, health reasons, or side effects.
The Copper Coil (IUD)
The copper coil, also known as the intrauterine device (IUD), is a small T-shaped device that's inserted into the uterus. It releases copper which interferes with the mobility of sperm and egg fertilisation, and also prevents implantation.
-
Duration: Depending on the model, the copper coil can be used for 5 to 10 years.
-
Effectiveness: It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
-
Period Changes: While highly effective, the copper coil may cause periods to become longer, heavier, and more painful for some women.
-
Emergency Contraception: It can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.

Ballerine Intrauterine Ball
The Ballerine is a newer, non-hormonal contraceptive option shaped like a ball, offering a smaller and potentially more comfortable alternative to traditional T-shaped IUDs. It works similarly to the copper coil by preventing sperm from fertilising an egg. Please note that the Ballerine will not be available in Ireland after the end of 2024.

-
Innovative Design: Its unique shape is designed to conform to the uterus, offering effective contraception with potentially less discomfort during insertion.
-
Duration and Effectiveness: Similar to the copper coil, it provides long-term protection against pregnancy.
-
Considerations: The Ballerine may have a slightly higher expulsion rate compared to traditional IUDs, particularly in younger women.
