Intra-uterine coils

🌱 Mirena

Used for contraception, managing heavy periods and as the progesterone component of HRT.

Lasts 8 years for contraception (10 years if inserted age 45 or over), 5 years for heavy periods and for HRT.

Releases progesterone and has the most hormone of all the hormonal coils (52mg levonorgestrel).

Largest of the hormonal coils (both the coil itself and the insertion tube), so most suitable for women who have had vaginal deliveries, but not exclusively.

🌱 Kyleena

Used for contraception for 5 years.

Smaller than Mirena so easier to insert and thus more suitable for women who haven’t had babies, or have only had c-sections without having dilated.

Contains less hormone than Mirena (19.5mg levonorgestrel), so suitable for women who are more sensitive to side-effects of hormone.

🌱 Jaydess

Used for contraception for 3 years.

Smaller than Mirena (similar to Kyleena) so easier to insert and thus suitable for women who haven’t had babies, or have only had c-sections without having fully dilated.

Contains smallest of hormone (13.5mg levonorgestrel), so most suitable for women who are more sensitive to side-effects of hormone.

🌱 Copper coils

Copper T 380 device is used for contraception 10 years. Is a bigger device and has copper on the arms of the T-shape as well as the body.

The Mini TT 380 is used for contraception for 5 years, is smaller and just has copper on the body of the device. As such, is more suitable for women who haven’t had babies, or have only had c-sections without having fully dilated.

Can make periods heavier and cause more cramping.

Start working immediately and can be used for emergency contraception.

🌱 Ballerine

New copper IUD and the first with a woman-friendly spherical design which adapts to the shape of the womb, rather than the traditional T-shape.

Used for contraception for 5 years.

Has the smallest insertion tube of all the coils on the market meaning less discomfort for the woman during insertion.

Consists of 17 copper beads strung along a nitinol frame. Is loaded straight within the insertion tube but when it's released into the womb it coils into a spherical shape.
