Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
To test for insulin resistance
Service Description
This is offered to women with PCOS, a history of gestational diabetes, or women who have concerns about their metabolic health. The patient attends in the morning after fasting overnight. A fasting blood glucose sample is taken. Then a 75g glucose drink is consumed over 5-10 minutes. This is 300ml clear liquid, orange flavour drink. The patient waits for 2 hours at the clinic. A repeat blood glucose sample is taken. The patient is then free to leave. Patients whom have not been seen in the clinic before the OGTT will then attend within a few weeks for a consultation when the result of the test is back. Patients who have already had a consultation and discussion regarding management pending their OGTT result will have a follow-up phone call with the results to clarify the plan.
